I studied physics at the University of Tehran, in Iran where I am from. Even though I got into the master's program there as a top student without taking an entrance exam, I decided to challenge myself by studying abroad. My interest in quantum mechanics and complex systems led me to Jörg Schmiedmayer's lab at the Technische Universität Wien (TU Wien) for my master's studies. In my master's, I designed and built an optical setup to produce arbitrary optical traps for atom chip experiments. As a Ph.D. candidate in the same group, I pursued my passion for quantum physics and focused on studying the non-equilibrium dynamics of many-body quantum systems with one-dimensional Bose gases. I've always been fascinated by how order emerges in living organisms, and I never missed an opportunity to attend biophysics-related lectures in Tehran or Vienna. Finally, I was fortunate to receive a fully-funded secondment as a VCQ (Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology) fellow, which allowed me to work on the cutting edge of active biological matter in Prof. Rob Phillips' group at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

Nataliia brought her expertise on simulations and theory and wants to apply them to the experimental data. She is taking over one of my projects, measuring the soliton statistics in a cold atom field simulator of the sine-Gordon model with engineered Dirichlet boundary conditions.
